Ingredients

Instructions

Dough Preparation
  1. Beat butter, sugar, and salt in a large bowl until well combined.
  2. Add egg yolk, whipping cream, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until light and fully combined.
  3. Sift in cake flour and cornstarch. Mix with a spatula until smooth.
Colouring & Piping
  1. Scoop 1/4 of the dough into a small bowl. Add coffee syrup or cacao powder, mix well, and transfer to a piping bag with an open star tip (e.g., D66).
  2. Add matcha powder and green food colouring (if using) to the remaining dough. Mix until fully combined, then transfer to a piping bag with a rosette tip (e.g., 336).
Shaping & Baking
  1. Pipe the matcha dough into tree shapes and the coffee dough as trunks onto a lined baking pan.
  2. Chill the shaped cookies in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 340°F. Bake for 16 minutes for soft cookies or 18 minutes for a crispier texture.

The baker gathered their ingredients, envisioning vibrant matcha butter cookies that resembled tiny Christmas trees. The softened butter whipped into a creamy base with sugar and a pinch of salt, creating a foundation for the festive flavours to come. As the egg yolk, whipping cream, and vanilla joined the mix, the dough took on a pale, silky texture.

Dividing the dough was a meticulous process. One portion became the coffee-scented trunk with the addition of syrup and cacao powder, while the remaining dough transformed into a vibrant green with matcha powder and optional food colouring. The contrast was striking, a blend of earthy tones perfect for the season.

Piping the cookies was an art form. The green dough swirled into delicate tree shapes, while the coffee dough created sturdy, decorative trunks. Each cookie looked like a miniature Christmas tree ready for a winter wonderland. After a quick chill in the fridge, they were ready for the oven.

The warm scent of butter, matcha, and coffee filled the kitchen as the cookies baked. The baker watched through the oven window, delighted as the shapes held and the edges turned a light golden brown.

Once cooled, the cookies were a feast for the senses. The soft, buttery texture complemented the earthy matcha and the subtle bitterness of coffee. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavours, capturing the essence of the holidays.

Friends and family marvelled at the cookies' festive design and irresistible taste. These treats became the highlight of holiday gatherings, sparking joy and conversation around the table.

The baker found satisfaction not just in the cookies’ beauty but also in the happiness they brought. These matcha butter cookies were more than a recipe—they were a celebration of creativity and the magic of the season.

As the plate emptied, the baker smiled, already planning the next batch. The matcha magic had worked once again, spreading holiday cheer one bite at a time.
